Bluetooth speakers have levelled-up in quality over the last few years, but some of them haven’t half become a bit serious-looking too. The UE Wonderboom brings back the cute factor, without losing out on sound quality.
It’s a squat little tower of speaker. If it had cheeks you’d want to squeeze them. But the Wonderboom is far from a gadget that only cares about looks.
First, it’s fully water resistant, with a liquid-repelling weaved grille and rubber port protector that allows you to dunk the whole thing in water without it ending up fried. There’s also a little bungee cord attached, just daring you to hang it up in your shower. Karaoke shower speaker: achievement unlocked.
There aren’t flashy extras like NFC, or phone charging using the 10hr battery, but there are more important bits instead. Like how the driver array gets you 360-degree sound. Put it in the middle a table during a poker game and everyone will be able to hear the tunes perfectly.
The UE Wonderboom is awesomely versatile, and picks the right features for maximum impact.
Its sound is very punchy given its small, squat frame as well. Unlike the similarly funky UE Roll 2, the Wonderboom has proper bass, letting kick drums pounds with more force than you’d imagine given the size of the thing. Treble is clean too, although the mids take a back seat and are a little thin. The bass tends to claim the spotlight, resulting in a less rich sound than some of the more conventional ‘bar’ speakers at around £100.
